Cut two of trailer.

This is the second rough cut of my trailer. I still haven't added any sound into it but I have added some more shots to vary my locations a bit more, as before it looked like everything was shit in one place. I've added in my film logos and titles. I think it makes it look more professional and realistic. I asked my target audience what they thought about it and they still said they didn't really get the narrative. But when I include my voice over I think it wil lal becme clear and it will tell teh narrative in a binary oppostion. Also the music that my friends band have created will set the mood of the genre and I think it will all coem together.

Progress with Magazine front cover.

I wasn't too sure about which one looked more effective. The one in black and white or the the one in colour? I looked at this magazine cover from the magazine 'FILM'.

I like the colour scheme which is used here, even though it's not for the same genre of film I am using. So this may be a problem if I would want to use this colour scheme. My genre is Romantic Comedies and they are normally bright, including whites, pinks, pastel colours etc. This cover makes me feel like the picture is entising you to read it. It comes across serious and brutal.

Here is more of a genre near mine. The colours are bright and vibrant. There is more writing and headlines involved in this magazine as the target audience is for females. Females tend to like to read more of 'gossip' magazines than men so they include interesting headlines. The background is more uplifting and i get a more pleasant feeling when i look at it. Im not sure wether to leave the background white or include a colour.

I uploaded these two pictures onto facebook to get some audience feedback, as i wasn't sure which one looked better, the dominant picture in black or white or in colour? So my target audience can decide which one will be suitable.

Here is another cut of my film magazine front cover. I'm not sure how to organise my taglines and headlines at the right hand side of the page. On some Film magazine front covers they don't feature much text. For example...

Even though this has a lot of text as a background it doesn't have any taglines around it, featuring different films, celebrities etc. I really like this idea and I think it gives off a really catchy effect. All these film magazine covers seem to have a background of some sort, so this is a problem which I am going to have to achieve to make my magazine look professional. I don't want my magazine to look boring, I want it to look unique and creative. I'm going to achieve this by representing my main character by choosing the right colours to go with my genre of film and as he is framed on the left hand side of the page it gives him power and it creates a dominant image.

I have chosen this cover as Robert Pattison is featured in the same genre of film I chosen. Also this cover has used the same colour code as I would like to use on mine. Robert is framed on the left hand side compared to mine which is framed on the right. These two magazine covers are very different in style but also quite simular as they are both unique in their own way. I like how this text is over lapping one on other.

progress with film poster

Here are two screen shots of me using photoshop to create my film poster. I have took them at different stages so it shows how much progress i am making. I'm not sure on the black and white pictures on the top, i wanted to create an effect of it looking like a film strip, but by not actually using someone else's picture. I will create my own outlining for the 'film strip' to make it look more realistic. I only wanted my main characters to be in colour as they are the colour in my film. So i may make the two end black and white pictures into colour. Also the pictures aren't just in black and white i have altered the auto tone and contrast to make it have a quirky effect.

I think also that if i keep the four pictures at the top they need to be centered accurately. As well, I'm a bit unsure on where to position my text for the characters names to be placed. I think where my text is placed for the tagline 'one chance, one time' i in the right place. And so is my 'one love'

I like how they have positioned the main characters face on this film poster. It creates the effect that she is secretive and maybe unsure on what she about to do. But as the main character she is still framed on the left hand side of the poster, this creates representation as a powerful woman. In comparison to this i have tried to create the same look for my characters in my poster. I wasn't going to include my female character in the film poster or magazine front cover but as I've come across this poster it gave mea boost of ideas to be able to include my female character. She is situated behind the male character as she lacks a bit of power in the film as the male tries to take over her life and tries to make her believe true love is out there. But you can still see she's there, and still has her power of her own. I wanted them to be smiling because i wanted to put to the audience that this is a fun film and it's an adventure of their lives and maybe they aren't taking too seriously, or are they? Also the four pictures on the top are all situated on the bench where they couples favourite place is t go and sit and relax and think of their memories together. So the bench in the film is mentioned a lot and in the trailer it is repeated a few times as its trying to get across that theres no way of forgetting her or their relationship and memories, its always going to be there even if they don't want it to be.

This is another poster which i have looked at to get ideas from. I got the idea for the four pictures at the top from this poster. As there is a film strip look on the main male characters top. Also he is based on the left hand side with the writing on the right. I think its a bit spacious on the right and maybe needed a bit of more text included. But i get the feeling he is lonely as that there is a lot of space surrounding him and he needs someone to fill that gap. I like the colour code in this poster, it looks as if he's on 'cloud nine', up in the clouds and he looks happy, as if he doesn't want to re turn back to the ground. He is smiling down at the memories which are placed onto his tee- shirt. Maybe by characters are smiling too much. I have took other pictures with them being serious but i didn't think it looked as good. The framing wasn't perfect. (below)

More stages during producing my Film Poster.
one.

two.

As you can see, 'one' the image is framed more to the right of the page but i wanted to move it more the the left to make it a more dominant image. I thought too much of the male main character's face was showing so i moved it to frame more to the left this is show in shot 'two'. I also made the image higher up as the eye line wasn't in the correct place. It now looks like they are both looking at the title 'ONE LOVE'.
I thought the background was too dark, I wanted it to be more whiter than it was in the original shot so I selected all the background I wanted to be lighter and changed the contrast and brightness of the selected image. It was very tricky to get around the top part of Taigh's hair as it's quite wispey and little bits were around the area i wanted to brighten. But i over come this problem by zooming in really far and doing a little, bit by bit.
I moved the text further up as I think the title should be higher in the page. I also moved the tagline up with the title so it fit in more with the layout of the page. But then i decided to move the characters name down to the right of the page as i didn't think the names fitted in under neath the title. It looked too cramped together. I changed the font of the characters name and also the colour. I looked at other film posters and most of the characters second name is empahasied by making the font bigger or a different colour, here I have done both things. 'ADAM SMITH and MARCUS PRATT' i made a smaller font as they aren't the main charater's in the film, I think I'm going to have to make it more clearer by making the main characters name's bigger than they already are. I've also lined up all the text on the right hand side to be all in the same line so it doesn't look messy and un-tidy.

Audience feedback on photoshoot.

I uploaded a few of my best pictures on facebook do get some audience feedback on which ones they like the best, as i was stuck on which ones to use. Also i wanted to find out what my target thought about how i represented the woman in the pictures. Hopefully they get the feeling that she is insecure on what she feels as i have placed her behind the man but she still gains a lot of power as she is on the left hand side on the close up picture. The boy is the main character in the film so he is based in all of the pictures. I included his friends in some of the pictures becasue I wanted to create the feeling that the female character has a secret identity as she doesnt know who she really is yet in the film. In the last picture i wanted all the white space on the right becuase some of the characters life is very spacious and open to anything to happen. Also the male characters life is dull and boring at the moment until a woman walks into his life

Rough Cut of Trailer, number one.

This is a first rough cut of my trailer. It is a very poor cut of it, as it has no editing, dialogue, over voice or sound effects added. All this will be added later. Baiscally I've captured and imported my footage and inserted it into final cut. I thought i would put my first cut up as it still has some potential. In comprising to (500) days of Summer it is no where near to the standards I want it as. My trailer needs more hyper cutting to make the audience feel the reality of the personal characters feelings. My shots in this first cut drag on for too long at the opening scenes. I need to either speed the shots up, or add a few more extra ones and cut to different parts. But i first want to introduce the two main characters in the film then move onto the storyline. I am going to re-take some of the shots in different locations and I'm going to edit some shots out as they are in appropriate. Also i don't think my shots flow very well and the beginning of other trailers i have researched, they all flow in the opening scene. At the moment it is lacking a lot and I have had some audience feedback and they have said they don't get the narrative of the story so this could be a problem. Using an over voice may overcome this problem as well as it will tell the narrative and hopefully make it all become clear. But adding more shots will help this also.

Photo Shoot Pictures.

This photo which I have taken is framed on the left hand side. But the female is stood behind the male protagonist holding flowers as her prop. She is holidng flowera and her expression on her face is worried and she is looking at him to and thinking. I wanted to include the leaves in my shoot as my setting is set in autumn. But it didn't work so well. I would say this is my best shot including the leaves. They are dressed in warm autum clothes to provide narrative information that the fil will be set in the autum time and will be about a love story. If i used this I would obviously crop it as you can see bits which aren't supposed to be there.

I really like these two images for my film poster. I think it represents the genre comepletly. Just like in my flat plans I always wanted to female to be positioned behind the male charater. I prefer the bottom picture with them smiling rather than their face's being serious. I also don't like how the top picture was positioned i think Taigh's head looks too close in depth and he needs to either step back or i zoom out. But i love how the bottom picture is framed and positioned. Although i would move them slightly more to the left and further up the page as their eye lines are different and when I add text it will look a bit weird becuase they will be looking at different things.

I like the idea of this photo for my film poster as it shows the contrast between the stereotypical social groups. The gay character and taighs friend are stood on the left hand side of the screen to show that in society homosexuals get less credit for being who they are. And I have gotten Adam to pull that pose as to say 'get off me' towards marcus (the gay character) to show the sexuality in society is really becoming quite a problem and people are turning 'homophobic'. It also needs cropping and editing done to it. I've also put Marcus in a pink shirt to represent his femininity.

Marcus, medium shot. I've dressed him like that to show how ive represented him as a gay character. i.e. tight top, tight jeans, hair flicked and a big cheesy smile.

I love this shot of Taigh. I would use this photo for my magazine front cover. I've seen a shot of Robert Pattison posed simular to this and I think it looks really effective. I would frame him more to the left and have my headlines and taglines situated to the right of hiim and maybe a few headlines across over the top of where his tee shirt is.

I also love this picture, the shot of him where the camera is looking down. I have done this as Taigh lacks a lot of confidence in the film so I've made the audience look down on him to set across some narrative structure. I like the colours used in his top, it makes it look more bright and effective but it wouldn't go with the colour scheme I want to use for my magazine cover which would be red, black and white so the blue could add some difference to it but it could also clash.

This picture, again shows how society has sterotyped 'gays'. As Marcus has gone to kiss Adam, Adam is having none of it and looks discuted. And this is how the media comes across to us as a audeince, some people find it disgusting how homosexuals can fancy onther member of the opposite sex.

I really really like this picture. This photo shoot idea was took from my flat plans, but im not quite sure weather to use and include Marcus and Adam in the magazine cover as they aren't presented as the main characters in my trailer. But i like the position Taigh is stood in.

Skills Development: Video Editing

Here is some video footage that i have made on final cut pro- media promo. I didn't shoot the footage myself but the media department had told us to develop our skills on final cut pro, ready to edit, my film trailer. We had to add and cut shots out as there was a lot of footage to use. I tried to use more little bits of everything to make it more exciting and not to make the viewer bored. I used garageband to create my no diegetic sound track. i found this quite easy to use, i managed to pick it up easily. So this is a advantage if i need to use this product to make my sound track for my trailer.

Problem.

Just before i was going to start my filiming one of my models have dropped out last minuet. It has took me a while to find another female character. But i have finally got one to take part in my production. To over come this problem i am going to re-story board a few of my shots and get them to sign the model release forms so i can prove i have their permission. I will fill out more call sheets to show my new character. But i will also keep the old call sheets on as it shows i have had a problem and over come it.

Script.

Manly over voice:
(1 second in) action productions and ripple pictures (13 seconds in) presents a story about love. (voice in music starts) (27 seconds in) A whole season of ups and downs. Of the unknown, of leaving. of togetherness. One time. of awkwardness of embarressment. One chance. to make it right. to trust. to desire. starring taigh connor watson as Harry Smith and Jessica Wheatley as Eve Dorn. A season of One Love. Comming Soon.

Researching for my Script.

A my genre of the film is a Rom Com, i want to search the meaning of love on the interent. I want the voice over to tell the story of the two main characters falling in love.

Here are some words i have found from researching. I will use the apporpriate language for my script. I wanted strong words to describe love, so it gets the message and feeling across to the audience.

Changes to my Reece.

There have been a few changes i have made to my reece. I have had a few problems for the location ' Saltburn Beach'. As the weather has become colder and wetter over the past few weeks, my scene is supposed to be a sunny, dry hot day set at the beach. Also my characters are finding it hard to get there for financial difficulties and transport. Another problem is the only times i can get there is after college hours and it starts to get darker each night and i need the shots to be set in the day time. So to over come this problem, I am going to be setting it in the autum time, cold, dark nights, romantic walks in the park with the leaves falling etc. Hopefully it will get across to the audience that autum can also be romantic as well as a summer romance. I will get this across to the audience by making more close up shots and closer framing to make the characters look and feel cosy and warm. I will be using brighter but in contrast with darker colours such as reds, oranges, black and browns.

Music.

As we are now not allowed to use music which has already been produced. I have chosen my friends band, to sing my chosen song i wanted, Sweet Disposition- Temper Trap.
They are going to make the backing track them selves as they all have the right professional equipment to do so. I will then edit it in garage band to make it fit with the correct time to my trailer. I like this idea better because now the song is going to be more unique. The band have been singing for over a number of years, they really enjoy performing and singing. They has also performed in a lot of productions taking the roll in the main parts which included a lot of singing and acting. So i thought they would be right for this part, I asked there permission if they would like to sing for the backing track of my teaser trailer and the band agreed and was really excited about doing it. It feels better than I'm making more of an impact in the music as the music is one of the main parts which puts the feelings across more for the audience.

SWEET DISPOSITION- TEMPER TRAP.

The Temper Trap are a alternative rock band from Melbourne. The song Sweet Disposition was used in a TV ad for Chrysler and Diet Coke in 2010, 'At Worlds End' The song came out at the beginning of august.

Institutional logos and music.

The examiner board has warned us about the particular type of music we tend to include in our product. We are not allowed to use any music which has already been produced and copyrighted, even if we have been given permission to use their music. Also the Examiner will be marking us on the use of sound used in our trailer so to overcome this problem i will be producing my own music, either on garage band or another product i could use on the mac computers. I know a few people which produce their own music so i may get in contact with them to see if they can perform and record the song i wanted in the first place, as the song i chose (sweet disposition- temper trap) matches in with the trailer, it has meaning and thought. And this was how i was going to get the meaning across to the audience, as the lyrics in the song ' a dream, a laugh, a kiss..' is exactly what the film is intending to be about.

The institutional Logos.
As well as the music being our own, the images we use for our logos have to be our own. We can use images off the internet but changes MUST be made to make the product our own and un-copyright. I will be doing this by showing my skills on photoshop to make my logos look more presentable and professional.

Monday, 20 September 2010

researching for my institutional logos.

FONTS.
Here is a picture from Photoshop which i have developed. I have chosen four different texts i liked off the website 'www.dafont.com' (below). There is a range of unique qualities to each font. Number one font is very formal and reminds me of roman writing. Font number two looks like the letters are made out of a film strip, i like this one because it will realte to the film trailer i am making and it looks professional and exciting. Font number three is small and interesting. You can obviously make the text bigger and change it around but i like how tight and together this text is formed. Its in italics and it looks very professional and script like. And font number four is really effective, i like how it looks scribbled. I think it would stand out on the page compared to the other three.

LOGOS.
I have developed a few different institutional logos. Here are some of the first draft ones i have produced. I have produced a few because i wasnt sure on the style I was going for.

I have developed and edited some of the above images to the best of my ability.

Here is the first stage i have made for my logo for my film title. And below is how I've produced it into further detail. I have chosen the black and white clouds to be behind the word 'one', because it's representing how dull and sad it is just to have one shot at love. And the word 'love' has colour added to it and the colour is back in the sky, this represents the happiness of love.

As i have been looking through different Rom Com trailers i have started to realise that the film name logos themselves are very simple but effective. Here are a few examples from the genre of romantic comedies.

As i have noticed this i might change my logo for 'one love' as i think i've added too much detail and it looks messy and un-organised. i simply might add a black background and colour my writing so it stands out more. I have looked at horror genre trailers and their logos are more effective and detailed. I think this is because they have to give a more scary effect in the writing as to their trailer. Rom Coms tend to put more emotion into their trailer rather to the writing, The text is normally quite girly and simple so it is easy to understand. I will still use the same font as i like the style of the 'scribble' effect but i will edit it to the best of my ability to make it look more for a romantic comedy genre.

Final Cuts for my logos.

I have encorporated my final logos focusing on my specific genre of Romantic Comedy. This is why I have chosen the coloue scheme and how plain and simple I have created my logos and film titles.
